Re: Compromise with LonerMatt

~~Welcome to the end of 2014~~ In this post I'm going to cover three things: 1. The year that was 2. December and End of Year Financial Report 3. The year that's starting Please strap yourself in for what can only be described as a long, wordy, and (potentially) disinteresting post. The Year That Wa...

Re: Compromise with LonerMatt

Thanks for your perspective! The investment would possibly be too much exposure (as I'd have to basically drop to $0 cash to buy in).

Re: Compromise with LonerMatt

Righto, there's a lot to say this month: it was turbulent. Let's start with expenses and then move on: Earned: $4188 Spent: $2362 Saved: $1825 Savings Rate: 43% Net worth: $66009 % growth: 1.03 Saved more than August, which is good. Spending is higher than my aim, but I don't really care (more below...

Re: How scared are Australians?

Sometimes I want to scream with how pathetically apathetic and almost pitifully dull we are as a society when it comes to political engagement, but that would achieve nothing. Is that because the economy has been good enough that the majority of people don't want to rock the boat or don't see a nee...

Re: How scared are Australians?

Bruz, if I could explain, in a sentence, I would have.

I hope - through explanation above - that you can see constitutional/rights concerns aren't really at the heart of this law.

Re: How scared are Australians?

OK - I'm posting some thoughts, if your reply involves any of the following bullshit US cliches do not expect me to engage with you: 1. You have no guns 2. You're still ruled BY THE QUEEN! 3. Constitution/BoR bullshit I don't even want to exlpain why these are tangential to the point of being infuri...

Re: How scared are Australians?

Guns is a silly thing to talk about here. There are many issues at play, and many of them involve a complicit citizenry either explicitly, or implicitly (voting in certain politicians). I have a lot of thoughts about my country and the way it is currently, I don't know if it's worth sharing here bec...

...without being too uncomfortable. I've been to a lot of 2nd world countries, and one or two third world. Let's be honest, it takes a significant amount of effort to be 'uncomfortable' as a tourist. I mean using a drop toilet while you've got food poisoning is uncomfortable, but is it intrinsically...

Re: Compromise with LonerMatt

Hey beloved readers. This has been an interesting month: I spent a lot of money and my savings rate was terrible, but I spent a lot of time reflecting and wondering if I care about that. To a large extent, I'm unsure. I'm unsure how to really start explaining myself. When I bought something, I would...

Re: akratic's ERE journal

Akratic - you're reminding a lot of the writer on the Ancient Wisdom Project. He basically is running and experiment/project to try and use very Ancient beliefs, philosophies, etc, to solve his issues around why he gets up, why he feels despondent, bored or meaningless. It's pretty fascinating stuff...

Re: Super basic room vs happiness/depression?

Sharing has its compromises. I've had two shitty housemates, and two excellent ones (one I fell in love with). Know what's important to you, communicate it clearly and early on. For example, I cannot stand dishes left out unwashed, or people making a lot of noise after about 9pm on a weekday. When I...

Re: The benefits of traveling

Definitely learned a lot about cultural practices, and also how linguistic differences alter thinking processes. For example, I've spent enough time in China and the Orient to realise a few things: 1. Mandarin is a very non-confrontational language (perhaps culturally rather than literally), so Chin...

I use a 16kg KB and do burpee jerks and lunges.

It depends if you want to keep getting stronger indefinitely - in which case a KB that has plates would be ideal.

This podcast is 10/10 - the permaculture divergence was just great, and thanks to all for not rehashing the past.

Given that your writing and the communities you've built, grown or inspired have helped a lot of people find a sense of themselves and improvement do you feel satisfied or rewarded regarding the community here, and in other FI circles?

Re: Compromise with LonerMatt

Hey! A few things happened in the past two or so weeks that have really got me thinking about a lot of choices and plans I had. When I started this journal, my idea was to work hard, save, invest well, and at a point be able to leave my country and life and travel long-term for awhile. As this year ...

A friend told me about this - on the website it doesn't seem to differ much from a usual RTW ticket, but he insisted he bought an open ticket through Qantas. I'd have to ring them to be sure that's exactly what's still on offer.
