Re: Did the value of secondhands change?

The secondhand market is definitely becoming more efficient. It's not just that there's more information about what the price should be but that the logistics infrastructure has been put in place to make it easy to move goods. There are basically more rent-seeking entrepreneurs and businesses who ha...

Re: Solopreneur MMG

If you want to make money on this, just do the opposite of what I have done. Most people aren't really interested in learning anything and those, who are, aren't willing to pay much since they can just learn it on their own. There's far more money in "quick&easy" courses than "goo...

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst

Is there a simple and practical guide to what permaculture is? I'll go with the possibly controversial opinion that the answer to this is: no, there isn't. Permaculture is the systems theoretical idea that the stocks and flows of nutrients and resources in an ecology are interconnected and so it ma...

@Jacob/@AH - have you thought about being a guest on Nate Hagens Podcast: The Great Simplification? Yes, @AH thought about it and he even emailed Hagens suggesting that I be a guest. Never heard back. TBH, I don't really follow the podcast (I don't subscribe to any podcasts. Just not a fan of the f...

Re: Nausea from Virtual Reality

Its the difference between seeing the Superbowl on TV or seeing it in person in the stadium. Being at Times Square on New Years Eve or seeing the ball drop on TV. VR can bring a facsimile of the experience, but it cannot replace the experience. I've realized that this really depends on one's temper...

Re: Nausea from Virtual Reality

The flight sim sounds like fun. I’ve always wanted to fly but I’m afraid of accidents. I think VR is good in that you can crash all you want. The helicopter rigs look really cool. My friend who worked on the sims at NASA says he can fly most combat helicopters now. He doesn’t even have a basic fixe...

https://store.steampowered.com/app/348250/Google_Earth_VR/ is kinda neat. Think google satellite view + street view on steroids. You get hills and depth perception. It's not quite like being there---more like "seeing there"---but it's the next level up from seeing a picture. In terms of na...

Anyone out there have experience with various backup power systems and have any thoughts? This seems very close to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_of_hierarchical_complexity ? What's most interesting to me about models with a generator for the next step (also see Bateson's recursive feedback model) is how it at some point becomes impossible to talk or even think about it. While possi...

Re: Actualization!- Level 7 towards level 8

The more common meaning of "money is on tap", at least outside this forum, is to have accumulated a pile so large your offspring won't spend it for generations. I think the same applies here with the caveat that future generations won't increase their spending level above yours. To put a ...

ETA: To clarify, I think I spend time with a fairly broad range of neurotypes. It's not like I'm only competent at a narrow slice of neurotype, although I'm 100% positive that certain neurotypes require less effort from me than others. For example, I just spent ~30days in close daily connection wit...

Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.

If you like HIIT type workouts, the Tapout XT series uses bands. It has an MMA theme, which can feel a bit gimmicky, especially if you had actual training. Just make sure the curtains are drawn! I don't recall if you're a HIIT fan. Personally, my body responds much better to HIIT than traditional 3x...

Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.

Do such heavy bands even exist without doubling or tripling them up?

As an alternative to Force(distance)~distance, you can use chains that are long enough to touch the ground. The more of the chain that is lifted off the ground, the heavier it gets.

Re: Frita’s Lost and Found

Idle isolation (great term) as a retirement lifestyle at any age does seem strange. Even buying into a retirement community resort, while not for me, makes more sense. One of the retirement OGs literally called his magazine The Idler . Most of his book titles are about idling. The quote from the wi...

Re: Low Income, Early 20s, Anti-Wage-Slave Living: Walwen's Journal

The key components are just knowing your deck real well and knowing how to play it against all the other major decks. The fact that there is a set of "major decks" suggests that a metagame is in effect. Compare, e.g. to Street Fighter. There's a finite set of characters. You pick 1 or 2 a...

Absolutely fantastic idea. I've never understood why you have to pay 300 bucks for a piece of cardstock when all the text and art written on it is already available online with high quality. Games should be for everyone. Because [rarity] creates variation in the decks of the players. If every card ...
