Re: Chenda's sober ramblings.
First: I hope chenda is doing good. Second Same here! I still drink almost daily, but in very small quantities. Ie we just had dinner, I had half a glass of wine and I am now allowing myself 1oz of whisky because Weekend! Since I last reported I slipped once, when seeing one of my best friends for t...

Re: Investments Trade Log
Didn’t know it creates a taxable event in Denmark. This obviously renders my suggestion useless. And good for you that you believe being in Denmark is more important than saving some money. The objective is to be happy, not to maximize financial assets. I have only been to Copenhagen a couple times ...

Re: Investments Trade Log
The market is richly valued in terms of P/E, CAPE etc. There isn't even the older excuse that "there is no alternative": one can get 5% from cash today. Regarding the economy, I think what Jacob is observing is textbook case of money illusion. All the consumer data I've seen (Nielsen, circ...

With markets being so high, I am surprised we aren’t hearing about the “I invested in the stock market and I am retiring at age 11” crowd.

Re: NYT article on fatFIRE
Good solid article overall, I think it did a good job, even considering the way too much focus on the FatFIRE side.
I, similarly to Ego, really enjoyed Jacob’s quote. Might have been 50 words, but he really made them count.

Re: Share your recipes
The thing with the precision cookers is that, once you find the right temperature/time that works for you (ie I like my potatoes soft but not toooo soft) then it’s perfect EVERY time. It is invaluable with steaks, fish, shrimp etc. There is also an additional benefit: you lose zero juices VS boiling...

I cook them at 90 C (that’s around 190-195f) for about 75-90 mins after cutting them in pieces of around an inch, then sautee them in a hot skillet or broil in the oven with some oil and rosemary so that they brown a little

Re: Ego's Journal
I think one element may be that the US consumer is cash poor these days. I know what the official numbers say (the economy as a whole is resilient) but when one looks at discretionary spending the data is consistently showing signs of a slowdown. Just look at car sales, plus I see Nielsen data on th...

Re: Investments Trade Log
In other news, BLV sec yield just hit 5% today. With all the overvalued, often money losing stuff going for insane valuations today, I think one could do worse than park their money into the world’s reserve currency long term bonds at yields 2% above inflation. One underappreciated thing is that due...

Very interesting perspectives rube I may be the resident anti-stoic here, but I would not worry too much if you are having a “lazy” phase. With work, we are programmed to always be busy with stuff that is brought to us by others, I think it is natural to need some adjustment to become fully “self-mo...

South Bali I agree is very touristy. I have heard it has gotten worse compared to when I was there. The northern coast was a lot nicer and less massified, have you been there? You are very close to one of the most beautiful resorts I have ever seen in my life https://maps.app.goo.gl/gaoNjpjucCiDoHEN...

Re: Where do you get music?
Apple Music is probably the best $100 I spend per year. I can afford it, I love music and I think that, in general, one should pay for the goods and services he consumes. Note: I have pirated plenty of music when I was poor as a “trial service”: I would download, listen to it and then buy if I liked...

It’s so cool having these updates from those who “made it”.
I am sure for many (myself included) the biggest fear before pulling the trigger remains the unknown, and not the financial aspect.

How much of these statements is a genuine opinion and how much is part of “playing the part”? Supposedly, the last bit of inflation is the hardest to kill - we seem to be there. Powell has all the incentives to sound tough. To his credit, so far he’s mostly walked the talk (hence why LT bonds got de...

Re: Investments Trade Log
Sort of yes. A simple model is price = price/earnings * earnings. Inflation tends to increase earnings, but the market tends to decrease the p/e multiple due to uncertainty about how much of the increased revenue translates into increased earnings since the cost of running the business also goes up...

Also: I know this is a concept someone born on/after 1980 has no idea of, but we had a lot of inflation. An on steroids example: look at what happened to the nominal values of the Zimbabwe stock market during their period of hyperinflation. Which is why I believe “the stock market is an inflation he...
