Re: Teach me how to sluggy
We put in an offer on a house in the city, and just got word that our offer was accepted! It's a significant downsizing—this new house is almost exactly half the square-footage of our current house. And it's about $150k less expensive, which is nice. I'm very much looking forward to pulling my bike ...

Re: What is a good learner car? (as in learning to fix and maintain yourself)
Maybe a weird take, but a 2nd gen Toyota Prius is a pretty decent compromise, I think. Certainly, they're more complex than an equivalent 100% IC car, but the popularity of them means there's a ton of info online. I've always been able to pretty easily find a Youtube video showing exactly how to fix...

Re: Insane Propane vs. Microwave Mania
I think it’s about right. Napkin math, a gallon of propane can produce about 1 therm. In watt-hours, that’s around 29k or 1 day of your 1200 watt microwave running. 2 hours of propane is just a bit over half a therm, 12.5 hours is just a bit over half a day. Seems ‘bout right!

It’s $6 per TB. If you’re backing up less than a full TB, your bill will be less. My last bill was $0.55

Re: Dropbox alternative?
I run a (much smaller) 4TB Synology NAS for similar purposes. I run a nightly backup to backblaze for all the non-easily-replaceable stuff. I don't have that much data worth backing up, so I'm currently spending less than $1/month for this little insurance policy. It costs about another $1/month in ...

Re: Teach me how to sluggy
Ha! Well in that case check out Oddissee if you are not already familiar: https://soundcloud.com/oddiseemusic . He produces and raps. It is a great combo. Thanks for the recommendation—this is excellent. I was mostly twiddling my thumbs at work, waiting for an incredibly slow data migration to run....

I think you misunderstand my goal. I'm trying to exploit the loophole while it's open, not get ahead of my peers. How does one get a corporate middle manager job? If you're really looking for something like this, just apply to them. Check out job sites like https://weworkremotely.com and fire in so...

Re: Teach me how to sluggy
Welcome! Sounds like you are well on your way. Congratulations! Looking forward to reading more! Thank you! I’m interested in poking at your thoughts on housing. The burbs was a mistake, but neither you nor your wife are sure exactly what you want (besides being back in the city). Have you thought ...

Welcome to the clearnet! :D Congrats on the pending FI status. Looking forward to following along your return to civilization. The clearnet eh? How ominous sounding. Thanks! I just scheduled a time to look at an apartment this weekend, actually, so fingers crossed this storyline progresses quickly....

Re: Make Your Own (Wobble Disk) Coffee Roaster
Ahh, this is so cool. I also occasionally roast in an air popper, and find the work/reward ratio difficult to justify with the tiny ~80g batch size. A wobble roaster project may be in my future!

Ahoy!
Hello everyone. I'm a semi-longtime lurker who's been inspired by so many of you over the years, and decided it's time to stop being a creep, and participate a bit myself. Here's a few unorganized tidbits about me: I'm in my late 30s, married, working as a software engineer (real original, right?) I...
