Re: BIFL Stocks

I don't think I'd feel comfortable saying any stock is BIFL +1 See the "Nifty Fifty" for an attempt at making this kind of list circa the 1960s: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nifty_Fifty Many of them are either distressed, or have already gone out of business. If you want to lock somethin...

Re: 10 year old Prius or Accord?

If what you want is a transportation appliance, meaning a car that will just work efficiently and with minimal maintenance and mind-space, get "the smallest Toyota that meets your needs." Toyota has really mastered this niche across their line. IMO, a supermini hatchback (Yaris) suffices f...

Re: Permanent Portfolio in this environment?

Right, the PP is not designed to generate income, rather its goal is total return. In addition to yield, some returns come from capital appreciation. Stocks are expected to produce a real return through capital appreciation. Gold is expected to appreciate at the rate of inflation over long time fram...

Re: Permanent Portfolio in this environment?

@classical_Liberal You're right, historically there has been a lot of prosperity, a little recession, and only a few years of deflation or severe inflation. If that pattern continues, a prosperity-weighted portfolio is more optimal in the long run, no doubt. My first counter is that this is a future...

Re: Permanent Portfolio in this environment?

+1, the PP should be considered as a holistic self-regulating system. Quoting from the PP writeup on the ERE wiki (http://earlyretirementextreme.com/wiki/index.php?title=Permanent_Portfolio), Another key premise is that the future is unknowable. As a consequence, it is impossible to make accurate pr...

Minced garlic, ginger paste, olive oil, canola oil, ghee, table salt, black pepper, vinegar, canned diced tomatoes, basmati rice, all-purpose flour, carrots, yellow onions, russet potatoes, and whole chickens. I buy these primarily from Costco, but some non-membership big box stores are in my rotati...

Re: ERE Cooking for beginners

If your slow cooker dried out, it probably didn't have enough liquid. Usually liquid needs to cover all the dry ingredients. Prepared recipes should get that right. Pressure cookers and microwaves operate on different principles. A pressure cooker increases pressure which, as you might remember from...

Re: ERE Cooking for beginners

Pressure cookers and slow cookers are different, but both are potentially useful. A slow cooker can braise a big batch of food (like pulled pork or a big stew) for hours. It's particularly useful because it can be left unattended, so it can cook overnight or while you're away at work.

Re: Need some help making a money decison

If I were you I would prioritize this way: 1. Save up some operating cash, AKA "emergency fund" in other circles. This allows you to ride out cash flow issues (rent due before paycheck clears), buy in bulk, self-insure small items (refrigerator contents), avoid financing (buy phone in cash...

Re: ERE Cooking for beginners

My first pressure cooker was a small Presto from a thrift store that looked at least 30 years old. It worked fine but the size was limiting and it was difficult to clean. Then I splurged on a Kuhn-Rikon, which you could say is the Mercedes of pressure cookers, because it's probably overpriced, but i...

Re: Durable shoes

Conventional wisdom is to put shoe trees (e.g. http://www.allenedmonds.com/shoes/shoe-care/shoe-trees/full-toe-cedar-shoe-trees/SF604.html ) in your shoes immediately after you take the shoes off, and let a pair of shoes air dry at least one day between wearings. That probably necessitates at least ...

Re: Do I really need 8 GB of RAM instead of 4?

My work laptop has 4 GB and runs Windows 7; my personal laptop also has 4 GB and runs Ubuntu MATE. On both machines I typically have a couple dozen tabs open plus a big productivity application (Outlook, Office, Emacs, or similar). The Windows machine is swapping constantly and is therefore sluggish...

Re: Implementing Gold in the Permanent Portfolio with Low Transaction Costs

When analyzing transaction costs in the PP, keep in mind that transactions are rare. I follow the default rebalancing rule of "check once per year and after major world events" and have been contributing for several years, so one year's contributions do not trigger a rebalance by themselve...

Re: Legumes and sauces

Common ways of thickening: - mix in something thicker: mashed beans, pureed vegetables, etc. - boil off water (reduce); concentrates flavor but risks burning, can take a long time - incidental starch from potatoes, pasta, corn, etc. - corn starch or arrowroot - roux - gelatin (either as an ingredien...

Re: Need a new (to me) laptop -- best laptop/tablet?

I recommend a used Thinkpad. Any of the big sellers (T, W, X series) are cheap to buy used, designed to be repairable, and parts are widely available on eBay. Anything with a few gigabytes of RAM will run Linux fine.

Re: A Bicycle is Not the Solution

Your boss sounds like an ass. I'd suggest a full out motorcycle but really look for another job. +1 Prima facie this does not sound like a job worth investing in. Setting that aside, a used 100-250 cc motorcycle or scooter in very good condition is probably the cheapest way of solving this problem....

Re: Easiest way to get data off an old hard drive?

Yeah the cheapest approach is to move the hard drive to another working computer with the same disk interface. As pointed out, that may be tricky since the old drive is probably IDE, but for several years everything has been SATA. It's also moderate-effort since you'll need to open up and move stuff...
