Many thanks to Jacob for his last few years of hard work. I don't blame you for getting away from all the complainypants out there!
I hope we can all thank you by removing the need for a figurehead, by creating a sustained community of young, financially independent people whose existence speaks for itself.

Well, I think my kids breathed a little sigh of relief when I told them Jacob is returning to work. I think they are a little bit tired of hearing me say, "well, Jacob says..." :)

for me the point of ERE is not "retirement" per se but FI.
the freedom to choose what you wanted to do and not be golden-handcuffed.
jacob thanks so much for everything and best of luck in your new role. the fact that you don't "need" this job and can leave it if it doesn't work out MUST be sweet. ironically, you'll probably now have the relaxed confidence to succeed in it even more!
keep in touch ;)

ok, i know i'm not a regular here, but i'm confused by the confusion.
Jacob has let it be known that the ERE challenge was in the past.
He's an INTJ, so new complex problems are better than candy, and sometimes sex.
The markets are key to his long term plans, the more he knows, the better.
1 Jacob is enough to retire on, and he's proven that. but it's much harder to go for the bigger schemes on a single Jacob. by this i mean ERE city, ERE RV park, etc.
so an opportunity comes along to jump into the big leagues of a game he really has already been playing, with a downside of being out moving costs if he doesn't like it, and you feel betrayed?
So far in complaints, i've just seen the whining from those who didn't bother to read the blog, that he's a hypocrite for un-retiring. and the bellyaching from the frugal folks who thought anti consumerism was the same as "socially-conscious socialism" or whatever BS liberal title you have for it. both of these were addressed in the preamble of the blog post. Honestly people, what more did he need to say?
To jacob: Rock on! have a great time with it. i'm totally jealous, but not ambitious enough to follow. in mountaineering terms, i'll enjoy the foothills, have a great time on Rainier!
thank you for putting ERE together, your other thoughts, and hopefully your future thoughts. i may not agree with your premises, but i enjoy the processes.
PS, thank you again for the GW site, i still read up on that about 5-10 hours a month. i'm even less convinced, but very entertained.
knock em dead!

I think the word "retirement" I'm ere is again a sticking point (already discussed ad nauseum). It should just be called early freedom-to-do-whatever-the-heck-you-want-even-if-that-includes-a-paying-job extreme
